The Practice of Yoga

When the word yoga is mentioned, people often think of physical poses such as downward facing dog or tree pose.  The poses are an important starting point which helps us to develop strength, flexibility, stamina and balance.  Just as important as the poses is what the practitioner learns about themselves as they learn the physical poses.  The ability to learn about ourselves, svadhyaya (self study) is a key element in the practice of yoga.  We begin to challenge ourselves even in the poses which we already know by our self observations.

Can I counter balance the physical effort of the practice with a sense of ease?

Am I being honest about what is beneficial for my body?

How do tendencies like competitiveness or self doubting affect my practice?

Do I believe that I can become stronger or more balanced?

The practice of yoga is more beneficial when we are willing to weave together a balance of effort, ease and self observation.
